Space Environment Monitor

The SEM was situated near the EFFU on the top of the EFU, and consisted of an elongated cuboid, covered on all surfaces by MLI material.

Thirteen impacts were located on the SEM in subsequent analyses, all within a restricted area of about 1000 square cm.  There was also substantial discoloration of the MLI within the same region, and nowhere else on the same MLI, suggesting that this was the only area exposed to space.  However an examination of photographs of the SFU does not explain the concentration of impacts and discoloration, since other parts of the blanket were equally exposed.
